I’ve always loved doodling and patterning. When I was studying art in high school I painted patterns in bright colours and fine details for my year 12 major artwork (my parents still have one of them hanging in their lounge room!).

At the time I wouldn’t have been able to tell you the reason I chose this form of creativity. In hindsight, it was a good way to tune out and destress from the overload of exams and other life pressures.

Patterning is soothing and you don’t need to think while you’re drawing. You get a free pass to zone out and enter the creative state of “flow”. By the way, the artwork above is not my best work! It’s just a quick rendition to show you a general idea that anybody can do.

If you want to create something with more detail, try using finer point markers or felt tip pens and take your time. Try experimenting with colour combinations (black and white would probably look great!).
