Today we’re sharing a fun and easy sewing craft for kids, shape monsters with a free printable pattern.
You can sew Sammy Square, Tammy Triangle or Cecilia Circle, but watch out โ these guys will gobble up anything they find of their own shape!
Our shape monsters are part of the sew a softie tutorial hop, organised by Trixi from Sew A Softie blog.

I love sewing simple softies! In the past we’ve made dinosaurs, ghosts, jellyfish, bookmarks, to name a few.
These shape monsters use only basic stitching so they’re great for beginners and younger kids. They can be a little fiddly to cut out from felt, and some kids will need help with that. Also, the facial features are sewn on because I find that glued-on features don’t always stay put. To make the project simpler for younger kids you could glue the facial features on with fabric glue.
How to make a shape monster softie
You will need
- soft felt in assorted colours
- embroidery thread
- sewing needle
- Sharp scissors
- Your choice of shape monster
How to
Cut out the felt pieces. Pin the shapes to soft felt and cut around them. FOr some of the smaller pieces it’s easier to hold the paper shape over the felt whilst cutting, or you could use a small piece of double sided tape to keep it in place if that’s too tricky.
Sew the arms onto the back piece of felt, and the facial pieces to the front piece. Alternatively keep the facial features aside and glue them on at the end.
Place the two pieces together with the arms and legs on the inside, and sew most of the way around the body using running stitch. When there’s a small gap left, fill with stuffing, then complete the stitching.
All done! Shape monsters are so quick and easy to sew that you’ll be able to make the whole set all in no time.
