Here’s a super-easy Earth Day idea that kids of all ages will enjoy making.

It’s basically just a green and blue version of our scrunch-dyed paper towel art. We’ve used liquid water colours for dipping. You could switch this for food colouring drops in water if you don’t have any liquid water colours at home but beware that food colouring stains skin terribly and is also really hard to get out of clothing and off furniture.

If you choose to go with the food colouring option do it outside on a covered table wearing old clothes, because this is a very drippy craft.

This earth day art activity is perfect for preschoolers and kindergarteners and as you can see in the video my 10 year old also loved it.

Here’s how to make it…

How to make a sun catcher earth craft

You will need

  • paper towel
  • a paper plate (or a regular plate) to trace around
  • lead pencil
  • scissors
  • liquid water colour paint in green and blue
  • bowls for dipping
  • rack for drying
  • blu-tack for hanging

How to:

  1. Place a paper plate over a sheet of paper towel. Trace around the plate and cut it out to get your round earth shape. You can stack several sheets on top of each other and cut them out at all once if you want to make more than one earth.
  2. Pour some blue and green paint into small bowls for dipping (you probably won’t need as much as we’ve used in the video unless you want to make a lot of earths!)
  3. Scrunch the earth up loosely and dip part of it in the blue paint, then turn it around and dip the part that is still white in the green paint.
  4. Unfold the dripping piece of paper towel to reveal a planet earth!
  5. Lay it on a drying rack until dry.
  6. When finished, it can be hung on the window using small pieces of blu-tack.

trace a circle around a paper plate

add paint to dipping bowls

dip the paper towel into the bowls

unfold to reveal your sun catcher earth craft

hang the planet earth suncatcher to dry on a rack

So simple! Now your paper towel sun catcher earth craft is ready to hang.
