Make a simple magic wand for play using washi tape and our free printable template. There is a butterfly, a heart and, of course, a star that you can make.
This craft is a fun way to inspire screen-free imaginary or pretend play and would also make a great addition to a fairy costume. Perfect for Halloween or just for dress-ups any time of year!
I’m always looking for crafts which inspire play for my kids. I love that there is a fun thing to make, followed by a prompt to get them using their imaginations in play – so effectively two activities in one.
I also confess I’m a washi tape hoarder. It’s so pretty, and I just can’t get enough of it. Today, finally, I’m putting it to some good use.
If you too have a washi tape stash in your craft cupboard you can put one of these together in about 10 minutes max. They are SO quick and easy to make, and although I made these wands myself while the girls were at school I’m pretty sure that they would be able to make them too – they are easy peasy!
How to make a washi tape magic wand
You will need:
- The shape template (enter your email address above and it will be delivered to your inbox)
- A wooden dowel rod
- Washi tape in different colours and patterns
- Duct tape
- Ribbon to decorate
- Scissors
How To
First you need to print out a copy of the template, and then select a shape that you’d like to use for your wand.
Cut your selected shape out around the dotted straight lines, then flip it over and create a pattern on the reverse with washi tape.
Once you have made your pattern, turn the shape back over and cut around the black line of the shape.
Cover your dowel rod in a matching tape, and then use duct tape to stick the dowel rod to the back of your patterned shape.
Decorate with ribbon and you are done!
So simple, easy and pretty!

What dowels did you use? Thanks!
Kate says
I’m not sue what size the dowels were, since I made these a while ago. Just the standard size we had in the cupboard, lol. I think it’s pretty flexible, it will work with dowels of any size.
