Create a colourful bunch of egg carton flowers. This is a fun way to upcycle your old egg cartons and is a great way to teach kids about sustainable crafting.

It’s a lovely idea for Spring or Easter crafting, making a cute decoration for your home. A posy of egg carton flowers would also be a sweet handmade gift for somebody special.

egg carton flowers - how to make egg carton flowers

Egg carton flowers are a fun classic craft idea. We’ve made them once before when the girls were little and used them to decorate egg carton jewellery boxes.

This time around I’ve made the flowers as a stand-out item on their own. The finished flowers can be displayed in a recycled jar tied with a piece of ribbon, or you could give them away as a gift for Mothers Day, as a get well soon present or even as a teacher appreciation gift.

There are so many different ways to make egg carton flowers! I’ve brainstormed and come up with five different types in our bunch. There are daffodils, roses, generic flowers, tulips and purple bell flowers (I can’t think of a better name for these but I’m sure they resemble an actual type of flower out there somewhere, right?). The easiest way to learn how to make each type is by watching the video tutorial, but there’s also a written explanation below.

How to make egg carton Flowers

You will need:

  • Cardboard egg cartons (I used more than one for my bunch)
  • Acrylic paint
  • Bamboo skewers for stems
  • A kitchen skewer to poke a hole in the base
  • Hot glue gun
  • Optional recycled glass jar to use as a vase
  • Sharp scissors
  • Paintbrush

How to:

Cut the egg carton cups into shapes as per the tutorial video. Basically:

  • For generic flowers, cut two cups into four rounded petals, then stack to make a flower
  • For the daffodils, cut two cups into four pointed petals before stacking together (I know, daffodils actually have 6 petals but making them with 8 seemed easier)
  • For the tulips, squash a cup flat and then cut it diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner with a bit of a curved shape, then repeat for the other side. Cut a pointy middle piece to place in the middle, then stack together flattened to look like a tulip
  • To make a rose, cut one egg cup into four rounded petals, then take the long piece off the side that is used to close the egg carton and roll that up like a snail shell to glue in the centre
  • To make the purple bell flowers, cut the pointy pieces off giving them as much length as possible, and then cut the sides into four points. Bend these outward to create petals.

Poke a hole in the base using a kitchen skewer (an adult should do this step), then trim the sharp tip off the bamboo skewer with a pair of scissors and place a dab of hot glue on the end before poking through the hole as a stem.

Place the flowers in a recycled mason jar for display, then tie a ribbon around it. You can trim the stems so some are a little shorter for display purposes if you like.
