Aren’t foxes the cutest? They feature a lot in folklore and children’s stories for their cunning and intelligence (think Fantastic Mr Fox, Henny Penny and Jemima Puddle-Duck) but how much do you really know about them?

Before we get started, here are a few fascinating fox facts so kids can learn about them while they craft.

Fascinating fox facts

  • Foxes have a lot in common with cats; they hunt and pounce in a similar way to cats, are able to climb trees and have retractable claws
  • Foxes live on every continent except Antarctica. In Australia, they were introduced by Europeans and are considered an invasive species.
  • A male fox is called a dog while a female fox is known as a vixen. Baby foxes are called pups, kits or cubs
  • Foxes live in dens which they dig underground
  • Foxes are nocturnal, meaning they sleep by day and are active at night
  • They have vertically-oriented pupils enabling them to see in the dark
  • Their sense of smell and hearing is excellent – they depend on this for hunting
  • Foxes are playful animals and have been known to steal balls from backyards
  • Foxes are omnivores. They hunt and eat small animals like rats, birds, lizards and mice and round this off with berries and other fruit. They are also scavengers and will raid bins for food scraps like cooked vegetables, meat, bread and cheese.
