Make this easy geometric chicken craft to celebrate Spring!
Kids can cut out the simple geometric shapes and glue them onto a sheet of coloured construction paper to make a mother hen with three baby chicks tucked under her wing.
When I was growing up my family kept chickens – my favourite was a fluffy white Chinese silky named Molly who loved to be held and petted. Most of the time we didn’t have roosters (they were way too noisy), so when Molly went broody we had to steal her eggs away lest she sit on them for months on end waiting for chicks that would never hatch. It felt so mean – and she was ALWAYS going broody.
One day Mum bought a carton of eggs from a roadside stall and put them in the fridge. After a couple of days of refrigeration it dawned on us that the farm eggs might be fertile, so this time instead of stealing Molly’s eggs we swapped them with the ones purchased at the roadside stall. Maybe leaving them in the fridge for two days had spoiled our chances, but we decided it was worth a try.
Guess what? Three of them hatched, and Molly was the best little mother ever. She proudly hovered over her chicks when they were scratching around in the garden and showed them how to look for worms and bugs. At nap time she kept them safely tucked under her wing for warmth, all snuggled together in her nesting box.
So you could say Molly was the inspiration to make this sweet geometric mother hen (although this one is not white and fluffy). Lift up her wing to see the three little babies nestled under there sleeping peacefully.
Here’s how to make it…
How to make a geometric chicken craft
You will need:
• Construction paper in yellow, orange, red and one other colour for the background. White paper for the eyes.
• Glue stick
• Scissors
• Shredded paper
• Black pen or marker
• This printable template available in our shop, and also in our TPT store
How to:
Print out the template and gather your supplies. For larger groups of children use the teacher pack (featured in the video) and print the templates directly onto the coloured paper using the key provided in the template.
Staple the semi circle and triangle to orange paper, then cut them out.
Staple the smaller semicircle shape and the chicken’s comb shape to red paper, cut out.
Staple the ovals and single triangle to yellow and the 3 mini triangles to orange. Cut out along with eye.
Discard the white paper and assemble the coloured geometric pieces for crafting.
Glue the large semi circle onto a sheet of paper. Add the orange triangle to make a tail.
Add the yellow triangular beak and the chicken comb shape.
Glue on the eye and fold the straight part of the smaller semi circle (wing shape) over to create a tab for gluing.
Glue the wing into place.
Glue the three ovals into place underneath the wing.
Glue the beaks on, and use a black pen or marker to draw sleeping eyes.
Glue shredded paper across bottom to create “hay”.
Super easy and fun!
