What says “I love you Mum” better than a handmade card?

Personally, the kid-made goodies are my favourite thing about mothers day. However they turn out, whatever gets written inside them and however imperfect they are they always makes me smile. I’ve had wonky craft stick frames stuck to the fridge until they’ve fallen apart and have secretly kept the notes my girls wrote me with misspelled words and adorable expressions of love.

We all know that kids aren’t going to churn out Pinterest-perfect creations for Mum, and we all know that their mothers will love what they make anyway, just like I do. 

Usually I show you guys a polished finished product I’ve made myself which has been photographed under lights in my home-studio set up. I’m not doing that today.

It’s a bit hard to give you something that actually looks like what kids’ are going to make in the end (a common complaint craft bloggers get) so this time around I’m sharing the cards as blanks. I love blank templates because they give kids a starting point and a creative license to make it their own. There are a few finished examples the girls have made to go with them. If I shared these kid-made examples on Pinterest, they would get NO repins. They are candidly photographed, imperfectly made kids cards. However, the people who received the cards always adored them!

These templates are something I created back when my own kiddos were very small, preschoolers in fact. We used the blank cards for many homemade cards, not just for mothers day.

The girls loved to decorate them as birthday cards, Christmas cards, thank you cards – anything. The heart template was a special favourite and was printed out regularly.

Six blank card templates kids can make for mothers day

Heart shaped card

This heart-shaped card can be tied with a ribbon in the centre and opens up to reveal a special message (exactly what it says is your kid’s decision).

To make it:

1. Print out the template onto heavy paper or card stock (or onto paper then trace it onto card stock). 
2. Cut it out and fold the outer halves inwards to make your card. 
3. Decorate
4. Punch holes in each side and tie with ribbon

Handbag card

This was another favourite of the girls and is super easy to make. You’ll need either ribbon or a velcro spot to stick the flap down.

To make it:

1. Print out the template onto heavy paper or card stock (or onto paper then trace it onto card stock). 
2. Cut out shape
3. Fold flap down
4. Decorate
5. Punch a hole in the top corner of each side of the handbag and thread a pipe cleaner or ribbon through for the handle
6. Cut two small slits under the flap and to the end of the flap to thread ribbon through to fasten it closed. Alternatively use a velcro sticker.

Ladybug card

The lady bugs wings open up to reveal a mothers day greeting. You’ll need brad clips and googly eyes to finish it off.

To make it:

1. Print the template out
2. Trace the body onto black heavy paper or card stock
3. Trace the wings onto red construction paper (or print directly onto red and simply cut out)
4. cover the wings in black spots. Spot stickers or fingerprints work well
5. Glue on googly eyes

Tea cup card

This is template supposed to resemble a teacup sitting on a tablecloth. Decorate the background to look like a tablecloth, decorate the teacup and add a ribbon tipped with a personalised tea tag. You can even put an actual tea bag on the end of the ribbon for Mum, however the card won’t close very well if you do.

To make it:

1. Print out template directly to card stock, or print to normal paper and trace onto card stock
2. Cut out
3. Fold
4. Decorate
5. Cut small slit in top of teacup, thread a thin ribbon through, and attach tag to the end. 
6. If you like, snip the string from an actual teabag and add to the end inside the card, otherwise glue it to the back of the teacup

Flower window card

The flower window card has been designed to have the flower shape become a frame for whatever you decide to glue behind it. It might be an abstract artwork, tissue paper, cellophane, or even a photograph.

To make it:

1. Print out template directly to card stock, or print to normal paper and trace onto card stock
2. Cut the flower shape out of the centre. This is most easily done with a pen knife but for obvious reasons kids will need to use scissors or have an adult cut the shape out
3. Glue something to the back so the flower shape makes a window around it
4. If you like, glue the spot in the centre. If it doesn’t work with your card design (e.g. you’ve put a photo in the flower), then discard the spot.

Pop up rainbow card

With a bit of folding make a paper rainbow pop up, then decorate the front of the card however you like.

To make it:

1. Print the template pout onto normal paper
2. Fold piece of paper in half where marked above rainbow. Unfold again and cut out the shape
3. Once the shape has been cut out, fold in half again and then fold the rainbow down at a 45 degree angle as marked here to work the pop-up. Turn the fold inside out.
4. Decorate
